Rock Hounding

Do you love to find cool rocks?  Here are some of my favorite sites:

Geode Valley near Payson, Arizona.

If you are looking for a fun day trip for the kids, check out Geode Hill in Payson. We have a blast every time we go! The rocks are literally everywhere. They vary in size from less than an inch to several inches in diameter. You don't have to dig for them as they are sitting on the ground near the bases of tree, in washes, and everywhere else.

The valley we hike through is beautiful!

Relaxing on the banks of the East Verde River.

Check out what is inside.

They aren't hard to find.  Just brush aside the pine needles, and they appear.

Here is a look at one we cut open from our June 2022 trip.

How to get there:

Our favorite spot is near the East Verde River, near Whispering Pines.  This area is about 15 miles north of the town of Payson and about 1 hour and 45 minutes from East Mesa.

Here is a Pin that I dropped the last time we were there.

We usually park at a picnic area along the river on Fire Control Road, just before you get to the Verde Glen Campground.

Cross the river and head downstream a bit until a valley opens up on the north side of the river.

Our favorite hunting ground is less than a mile from the parking area.  You can also hike over the ridge directly across the river where you will also find lots of geodes.  Here is a more detailed map.

Please report back and let me know what you find!
